LENOVO A850 QUICK REVIEW (AND COMPARISON CHART WITH LENOVO S820)

Taking advantage of the festival season Lenovo will launch 4 new smartphones in India this month and at the top of the ladder will be Lenovo A850 which is 5.5 inch display Phablet. This Phone comes with a MediaTek Processor other than popular MT6589 and will compete with other quad core devices priced around 15,000. Let’s take a look at what Lenovo is offering to surpass the competition.

Camera and Internal Storage

The Auto focus camera in this smartphone has a 5 MP sensor with 2592х1944 pixels and LED flash for low light photography. Most manufacturers will offer you an 8 MP or 13 MP sensors in this price range. The camera quality is much more than the Mega Pixel count and though we expect the hardware quality to be above average from Lenovo, we can only be definite after we review the device. A front VGA camera is also available for video calling.

The Internal Storage capacity is 4 GB which is not impressive in a device above 15,000 INR. Although, something new that sets the storage apart from the crowd is that it can be extended up to 64 GB using MicroSD card rather than the conventional 32 GB, Something which will also be present in the upcoming HTC Desire 500

Processor and Battery

Lenovo A850 is powered by MT6582M MediaTek Quad core processor based on Cortex A7 ARM architecture, which has each core clocked at a frequency of 1.3 GHz. The clock frequency is marginally more than the conventional MT6589 SoC, but in the same price range, phones like Wammy Passion Z+ will offer you MT6589T clocked at 1.5 GHz.

The GPU backing this processor is Mali-400MP2 which has 2 cores clocked at 400MHz and this might perform  better than 357 MHz PowerVR SGX 544 MP GPU in MT6589T. Thus over all this processor will expectedly give you better gaming performance than the rest of the competition. The RAM capacity backing up this processor is 1GB which is pretty standard in this price range.

The Battery Capacity is 2250 mAh which again considering the Massive 5.5 Inch Display may fall short on several counts. The battery capacity none the less remains above average.

Display and Features

The display Size of 5.5 inch won’t be very comfortable to hold but this size is in great demand in Indian market acc to the latest IDC survey which claims that Phablets account for above 30 percent of market share in Indian market.

The 5.5 Inch IPS LCD display will sport 540 x 960 pixels qHD resolution which amounts to 200 ppi. The larger display will appeal more to those who love to read on their smartphones. At the pixel density of 200 ppi you will be able to see resolved pixels and the text is expected to be not that crisp.

This phone comes with Dual SIM dual Standby functionality and runs on Android 4.2 Jelly bean version which will soon be the next best version with the launch of Android KitKat next month. Hope fully Lenovo will provide with OTA updates next month with this device.

Looks and Connectivity

From the Pics it is evident the body design of this smartphone is quite simple. A round glass covering the camera sensor is located at top center on the back panel where as the phone appears more flat with slightly curved corners.

Body dimensions are 153.5 x 79.5 x 9.5 mm and the phone weighs 184 grams which is acceptable considering the large screen size. (Micromax Canvas Doodle 2 with 5.7 inch display weighs 220 grams) The connectivity features include 3G, EDGE, WiFi, GPS with AGPS support and Bluetooth with A2DP.

Comparison

This phone will compete against phones with 5.5 inch phones in India like Micromax Doodle 2 and Karbonn Titanium S9 which come with better display resolution and are priced slightly above Lenovo A850.

Also this phone will face competition from the 5 inch devices like XOLO Play T1000, Lava Iris 504Q, XOLO Q1000, Panasonic P11 and Micromax Canvas 4
