OUTCOME OF 27/01/2014 MEETING WITH IBA

As usually, IBA playing with the sentiments of Bankers. After calling off the strike on 21st & 22nd January 2014, Today i.e., 27.01.2014, IBA called for talks to proceed with 10th Bipartite Settlement which is due since 01.11.2012. In the today’s meeting i.e., on 27th January 2014, IBA Offered 0.5% increase over the previous 9.5% offer. This is not at an acceptable move by IBA. Even though no date was mentioned for next round of talks, UFBU called for strike on 10th & 11th February 2014.
First of all, It was a bad move by UFBU to call off the strike on 20 & 21 Jan 2014. If we have participated in strike as per prior call by UFBU, this mere increase would not have happened. So, at least now, we have to participate in strike on 10th & 11th February 2014. I will post the gross salaries as per the 10% increase tonight. Post views in comments section.

NEXT GENERATION FORD FIGO IS HERE

Ford Ka Concept Front

Ford Ka Concept Rear
Ford has officially unveiled the next generation Figo (B562) in the concept guise, which is more or less the same as the production avatar. Ford is preparing to launch the new offering next year with extensive localization to attack the hatchback segment in India. The B-segment is being ruled by the undisputed champion, the Maruti Suzuki Swift since eight years. All this while, other manufacturers have tried their best but no one came close to the Swift. Similarly, Ford will introduce the next generation Figo, pitting it against the segment leader.
Ford Ka Concept Tyres
It is confirmed that the 2015 Ford Figo is based on the existing platform but modified using lighter components. The new Figo will grow in dimensions and will be equipped up to the brim. Having said that, it will enter the upper end of the B-segment to compete with the likes of the Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20, upcoming 2014 Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo, Fiat Punto, Nissan Micra and similar hot hatches. So it will be an uphill battle for the American carmaker to attract buyers from the accomplished competition.

Ford Ka Concept Roofline
The perfect recipe for quick appreciation in this segment is pricing, frugal engines, styling and features. We believe that Ford India will be able to meet the aforementioned tasks easily considering the fact that they will achieve over 90 percent of localization for aggressive pricing, they are expected to introduce the frugal 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine and the 1.5-litre TDCI diesel engine, the styling is aggressive and attractive as we can see on the concept and lastly, we will see Ford EcoSport derived features on the new hatchback.

Ford Ka Concept Tail Light
Also, Ford cars are well known for their driving dynamics. In similar fashion, we can expect the new Figo to attract enthusiasts seeking a car with precise cornering abilities. Overall, the new Ford Figo has very promising attributes for the Indian market to look forward to. Ford India is currently on a roll with the entry of the EcoSport that has made a big impact in the market. Following the success of the EcoSport, the next generation Figo could be the one to unsettle the hatchback segment.
The next generation Ford Figo is expected to start production between March and April in the Brazilian market and hit the dealerships in May 2014. They are expecting Ford to price the new hatchback between R$ 30,000 (Rs. 8.18 lakhs) and R$ 45,000 (Rs. 12.27 lakhs). In specific markets, Ford is expected to introduce segment first features on the new Figo such as traction and stability control. Meanwhile, Ford India is likely to showcase the next generation Figo concept at the upcoming 2014 Auto Expo in February.

12th AUTO EXPO TO SEE 69 MODEL LAUNCHES & 15 GLOBAL UNVEILS

Auto Expo 2014: Auto companies lineup 69 model launches and 15 global unveilings
You'd expect Vishnu Mathur's mood to reflect that of the Indian auto sector — downbeat, what with the industry in the midst of an agonizing slowdown, and sales dipping in the April-December period over a year ago.

Yet, the director general of SIAM, the apex auto industry body, has been full of beans and on the go in the past two weeks, with a schedule so frenetic that it belies the sector's downturn.

For starters, Mathur has temporarily moved office from the India Habitat Centre in the heart of Delhi to Greater Noida on the outskirts. Except for the receptionist, his 30-odd staff too has accompanied him. Their days are hectic, starting at 8.30 am and they aren't home before 10 pm. "It will get worse from next week. We may not be able to go home," Mathur says, and you wonder whether he's pleased or distressed by that thought.

As SIAM's boss, Mathur is steering India's once-in-two-years auto show, to be held from February 6-12, for the first time in Greater Noida. Appointed in 2010 summer as director general, this is Mathur's second auto show, which is the Rs144,000-crore auto industry's biggest shindig. Understandably, a lot is at stake for him — and the sector.

Going by the early signs, Mathur may have a lot to cheer. This could perhaps be the biggest auto show in India's history. With over 47 vehicle manufacturers (2012 saw under 40), 69 model launches (58 in 2012) and 15 global unveilings, it promises to have the petrol (and diesel) heads drooling.

The new venue, India Expo Centre, is also bigger — the covered area has gone up from 44,000 sq m in 2012 to 64,000 sq m. "This will be one of the most watched auto shows in India," says Deepesh Rathore, founder, EMMAAA, an auto consultancy.

Yet, barely a month ago, Mathur reflected a very different mood. For some time now, the industry has been reeling under slowing sales. December was one of the worst months. "The decline in annual cars sales [almost 10%] that we witnessed in 2013 was the first we have seen after 2002," a grim Mathur had told the media in early January.

Automakers, amidst a sharp increase in capacity, have been resorting to plant shutdowns, layoffs and hefty discounts. "We are hoping that the auto expo becomes the springboard for a shift in consumer mood and fortunes of the industry," adds Mathur.

Ahead of the 12th auto show, sentiment has perked up. Gloomy headlines have receded and new launches have taken their place. Auto executives have more important things than the domestic gloom on their mind as their global top honchos come calling.

"The year 2013 is behind us. We are keen to showcase what we have planned for our customers ahead. The auto show is giving us a bigger platform that gains twice the importance during a slowdown," says Sandeep Singh, deputy MD of Toyota Kirloskar Motor.

New Venue, New Hope

There are many firsts to this year's auto show. One is the timing. India auto shows were always held in early January but the date has now been permanently moved to early February to harmonize the India expo with the global auto show calendar and thereby avoid date clashes.

Also for the first time, the venues for the makers of components and automobiles have been split. While the former remains in Pragati Maidan, the latter has moved to Greater Noida. "This is not an ideal situation. But given the space constraint, this was the best we could do," says Mathur.

Pragati Maidan has both advantages and disadvantages. Bang in the middle of the capital, the show attracted big crowds. In 2012, it attracted 700,000 visitors, making India's the world's second-largest auto show after Shanghai in terms of number of visitors. But it also meant dealing with unruly and unwanted crowds and creating a near stampede-like situation.

Greater Noida, on the outskirts, will attract more discerning visitors, although a section of industry executives does worry about a thinner audience. SIAM expects roughly 75,000 walk-ins daily in the upcoming show against 100,000-odd in 2012. But many prefer to see the positive side.

Jnaneshwar Sen, senior V-P, sales and marketing, Honda India Cars, quips: "We for one are happy. It [the venue] is next to our office." On a serious note though, he adds: "We were more concerned about the stampede [during the previous auto expo] and that few were able to see or showcase their products well."

Meanwhile, SIAM is doing all it can to pull in the crowds. It will offer a free shuttle service from the nearest metro station in Noida and from Pragati Maidan in Delhi. There will be dedicated lanes on the Greater Noida expressway for cars with tickets. Special arrangements have been made for toll collection for yellow number plate vehicles at the venue itself.

The organizers are planning additional attractions. There will be 60 food stalls, 20 food and beverages kiosks and two five-star restaurants serving food. The show will give away one vehicle every day through a special lottery for visitors. It will also have a super bike pavilion, vintage cars and go-karting at the venue.

"This time we have a new venue with modern facilities and an international-level infrastructure. All this brings an opportunity to think out of box in terms of display and visitor experience," says Mayank Pareek, chief operating officer (marketing and sales), Maruti Suzuki.
Beauties on Four Wheels

It helps that auto companies across the board are going all out to fire up sentiment and woo Indian consumers. Many auto firms — Datsun and Isuzu Motors of Japan, Italian bikemaker Moto Morini and Indo-South Korean joint venture DSK Hyosung — are making their India debut at the auto show.

Clearly, carmakers are not allowing the overhang of declining sales to spoil the expo party. Consider, for instance, Tata Motors which isn't letting a 42% slump in sales in December dampen its plans to showcase two brand new cars — a hatchback and a sedan codenamed Falcon.

According to media reports, between Tata Motors and JLR, the group is expected to unveil 11 new products. "This has undoubtedly been the most challenging and prolonged downturn that the Indian auto industry has witnessed. That makes the auto expo even more important," says a Tata Motors spokesperson.

Market leader Maruti Suzuki, which witnessed a sales growth of 6.4% in December, too, has many beauties lined up. But it plans to keep the suspense on till the show. Media reports though suggest that the company will be doing three global launches, including compact hatchback Celerio. Maruti's Korean rival Hyundai will have the global debut of its new Grand i10 compact sedan. BMW and Renault will have four launches each. Ford is reported to be unveiling the Ka concept and also a sub-4-metre compact sedan to compete with Maruti Dzire, and Toyota will unveil its brand new Corolla. Audi will unveil the A3 sedan and Mercedes will showcase its CLA 45 AMG.

Strong Japanese Flavour

Going by the showcases and launches planned as well as top honchos in attendance, it is clear that the 12th auto show will have a strong Japanese flavour to it. A Maruti Suzuki spokesperson did dryly enlighten this writer that "it will do everything it can to delight the visitors", but this year it could well be the lesser-sung Japanese rivals (at least in India) who could steal the show.

Let's start with Honda Motors, which has come back into the reckoning from virtual oblivion on the back of a few successful launches. As the industry groaned under the weight of a sales dip, Honda's December car sales grew 29% on the back of brisk demand for the Amaze sedan and Brio compact.

Its new City has been received well, too. With global president and CEO Takanobu Ito in attendance, Honda plans to follow up its recent good showing with a sizzling line-up at this year's show. This includes the Vision XS-1, a futuristic crossover that will make its global debut, the Mobilio MPV, the new Jazz and the Accord hybrid.

Nissan too has big plans. It will showcase the new Sunny sedan, the Friend-ME concept and display the GT-R GT500 race car. Its newly revived 83-year-old brand Datsun will make its India debut with the entire product range on display. This will include the Go and Go+ MPV. Not to forget the global debut of its Datsun concept car.

Giving its India presence some heft, Nissan will also have a slew of senior executives from Japan flying to Delhi for the auto show. They include Toshiyuki Shiga, vice-chairman of Nissan Motors, Shiro Nakamura, chief creative officer, and Vincent Cobee, head of Datsun project.

"The India auto show is a very big and important event for us. And its importance is increasing. It offers a rare opportunity to showcase our cars, brands and ambitions — even in these difficult times," says Kenichiro Yomura, MD, Nissan India.

"The Japanese are investing here. They have big plans. Between Suzuki, Toyota, Honda and Nissan, they will have a major share of India's car market," avers Rakesh Batra, partner, Ernst & Young. Partly it has to do with the warm bilateral ties between the two countries. On Saturday, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe met his Indian counterpart for the third time in the past eight months. A host of other initiatives are in the works to improve trade ties between the two countries. That Japanese companies are not favourably disposed in China, the world's largest auto market, may also have a part to play in Japan's renewed focus on India.

There are a couple of other themes that will play out at the auto expo this year. Compact hatchbacks is one of them. Carmakers across the globe — Europeans, Americans and Japanese — have finally realized that what Indian consumers need are small cars. And their product line up for the show demonstrates that they are willing to invest time and resources to cater to India's needs. Not just Honda, Datsun and Ford, even luxury carmakers like Audi and BMW are laying thrust on entrylevel small cars.

Two, compact SUVs, a niche successfully exploited by Maruti's Ertiga and the sub-4-metre sedan, pioneered by Maruti's Dzire, are becoming more mainstream. Three, hybrids and electric cars, which have yet to catch buyers' fancy, will make their presence felt. BMW will bring its 'i' range showcasing the i8 hybrid sports car.

For home-grown Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), hybrids and e-vehicles will be the dominant theme with a hybrid XUV, and the Mahindra Reva 4-door sports car will also be on display. "Our overarching theme is showcasing technology this time," says Pravin Shah, CEO (automotive division), M&M.

Will the Tide Turn?

There is a clear air of expectation among auto executives and SIAM's Mathur sums it up when he says, "The mood of the industry is that of hope as they gear up for the big show." Wilfried Aulbur, managing partner, Roland Berger India, a strategy consulting firm, agrees: "Despite a bad patch, it is time to tell yourself that the world has not come to an end."

To be sure, cyclicality is a constant companion of the auto industry, and often it's during a downturn that products are planned keeping in mind the outlook in the medium to long term. Says Kumar Kandaswamy, senior director, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India: "This is an industry that looks at a 3-5-year horizon. With new platforms, new models, the industry is configured to deal with ups and downs."

Establishments in and around Greater Noida may be hoping the auto expo achieves what the 2014 Detroit Auto Show — which concludes today — is expected to do for the city's bankrupt economy: generate business of nearly $400 million. This pick-up is expected via increase in hotel occupancies, and increased business for restaurants and bars.

Such spin-offs may not be seen in as big a way in Greater Noida as in Detroit, yet the stakes may actually be larger for the Indian auto industry. New launches, future product line-ups, glitzy press conferences can do their bit to spark off fresh interest in car purchases.

Batra of Ernst & Young says: "Auto shows and the buzz around them certainly create a positive momentum. Is that going to result in 20% sales growth? No. But it certainly impacts consumer sentiment."

Rahul Jain, partner, BCG India, says in difficult times like these, carmakers are looking for niches that are growing even in this slowing market.

"The market is not uniformly bad. Ford and Honda, which are sitting on months of bookings, will tell you that there is demand provided you have the right product," says Subhabrata Ghosh, CEO, Celsius 100, a marketing and branding firm focussed on the auto sector.

Sylvain Bilaine, former MD of Renault and now MD of Sky B Consulting, is perhaps the most succinct in his analysis: "Auto shows are about the future.

Its prime job is to attract media, build a hype, show future product line ups, generate interest, demonstrate ambition, build brands. It is not about sales." Indian automakers will be hoping that the sales follow on the heels of the hype and hoopla.

SUZUKI HUSTLER MAY BE HEADING TO INDIA

Suzuki showcased the Hustler at the Tokyo Motor Show in November this year and the mini crossover caught our attention. The Hustler was in the news everywhere and the speculation games began on whether it will be launched or not. Interestingly, a news report in an automotive website claims the Hustler could be headed for India and Maruti will target the youth and young families by launching the mini SUV.

The Hustler is an unconventional looking mini crossover which is based on the Wagon R’s platform, but has greater interior space using the same underpinnings. The Kei SUV gets a three pot, 660cc engine in naturally aspirated and turbocharged form with two transmission choices; a five-speed manual or a CVT. The Hustler can be bought with a 2WD or 4WD with the stick-shifter or minus one-pedal in the Japanese domestic market. However, if it does make it to India, it won’t get this motor and might share the K-series power trains with its Indian cousins and may not get the 4WD either.

The Hustler starts at 1.048 million Yen (Rs 6.15 lakh) in the JDM and can be bought in 11 shades of colour, with lots of innovational touches to the interiors and feature list. The fuel economy for the naturally aspirated 660cc mated to a CVT is rated at 29.2 kmpl put through the JC08 cycle.

If the Hustler makes it to India, it could threaten the sales of its Indian cousin the Ritz, if priced close to it. India isn’t a market where anything will sell, but coming from a manufacturer like Maruti, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Hustler walks away with the honours. It is a lot smaller than the Duster and EcoSport, and the Hustler might muscle its way through a new segment altogether.

We will be waiting until the Auto Expo 2014 for more news on the Hustler.

Compact SUVs for 2014

The Compact SUV segment is one of the fastest growing segments in the country and the only one that is showing consistent growth while the automotive industry in general slows down. Although Premier Automobiles was the first official compact SUV in India with it’s Rio, bad sales and service networks translated into almost negligible sales figures. The real action in the segment began in August 2012 when Renault finally launched it’s much awaited Duster which in turn became a roaring success. Earlier this year, Ford’s Ecosport too turned the market upside down with roaring sales changing Ford’s public perception. This year though, the compact SUV segment will be THE segment to look out for with Maruti, Mahindra, Hyundai and Honda gunning for the top spot. Read on to know more.

Maruti Suzuki XA Alpha
Expected Launch : Early 2014
Expected Price : Rs 7-10 Lakh
Maruti Suzuki XA Alpha

Maruti first unveiled its compact XA Alpha SUV/Crossover concept at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo in Delhi and if sources are to be believed shall launch the production version of the same in early 2014. Based on the Swift platform, the XA Alpha is most certainly going to be one of the most highly anticipated cars of 2014 and will revolutionize the compact SUV sector in India.
The XA Alpha’s production version will be powered by the same Fiat derived 1.3 Litre Multijet engine and a 1.2 Litre K-Series 4-cylinder petrol powertrain. The XA alpha will also showcase future design elements in terms of interior and exterior trim while sharing components from the current crop of Maruti’s wide offerings.
With a retro touch combined with a fresh new design, the XA Alpha’s chunky look harks back to the days of the original Suzuki SJ (Gypsy in India) series. With large chunky wheels and a wide stance, the Suzuki XA Alpha will certainly appeal to both the established car buyer and the first time car buyer in one swoop. All of the above combined with Maruti’s service network will most certainly give cars like the Ford Ecosport and the upcoming Honda SUV a run for it’s money. We expect an entry level petrol version to be priced at about Rs 7 lakh whereas the entry level diesel should be priced anywhere between Rs 7.5-8 lakh

Honda Small SUV
Expected Launch : Mid 2014
Expected Price : Rs 8-12 Lakh
Honda Compact SUV Front Angle

Honda’s foray into the compact SUV/crossover segment will be as important as the XA Alpha from Maruti-Suzuki. With Honda’s reputation for building bulletproof cars, the compact SUV will definitely be a hot seller. Just like the new Honda City (which will be unveiled on November 24, 2013), the new compact SUV will be based on the new Jazz platform.
Honda recently released pictures of what they call the ‘Urban SUV Concept’ and the similarities to recent Honda offerings like the new Jazz are quite obvious too. The Urban SUV concept features a large grille and long horizontally stretched headlamps, compact overall proportions and a swooping roofline. From the rear too, the horizontally stacked tail lamps and the a large chrome accent piece running across the sculptured tail gate.
Honda Compact SUV Rear

The compact SUV will share the 1.5 Litre i-Dtec engine which will also do duty in the Honda Mobilio and will get either the 1.2 i-Vtec engine from the Brio or the 1.5 Litre i-Vtec engine from the Honda City. It is unclear whether this new compact SUV will be under the 4-meter mark to take advantage of excise duty exemptions but it does look like Honda could pull it off by reducing bumper overhangs. Expect this compact SUV from Honda to cost between Rs 8-12 Lakh.

Hyundai ix35
Expected Launch: early 2014
Expected Price: Rs 7-9 Lakh
Hyundai ix35

Hyundai’s compact SUV, the ix35 will make to Indian shores in the first half of 2014 going head to head with the likes of Maruti-Suzuki’s XA Alpha and the Ford Ecosport. The ix35 looks distinctively like a Hyundai with its fluidic design language.

At first glance, the ix35 looks like an expanded Verna with a similar split grille and swept back headlamps. There are several little chrome details that make the ix35 look much more expensive than it actually is while giving it a mature and grown up feel. The ix35’s compact size along with it’s striking design will definitely strike a cord with eager Indian audiences.
Hyundai ix35 Rear

Mechanically, the ix35 will feature the same small 1.1 Litre Crde engine that does duty in Hyundai’s new Grand i10 but with a greater power output. We also expect Hyundai to offer the 1.6 Litre Crde engine that they currently offer in the Hyundai Verna as a range topping engine.
Expect the ix35 to be priced extremely competitively with prices for the petrol starting at just under 7 lakh and the base model diesel costing not more than Rs 7.25-7.5 lakh.

Mahindra Compact Suv
Expected Launch: Late 2014
Expected Price: Rs 6-9 Lakh
Ssangyong SIV1

Although details are sketchy about the compact SUV project, a recent concept from SsangYong called the SIV 1 may provide us with clues on what the Mahindra Small SUV could look like. Slated to launch with the same mechanicals as the Mahindra Quanto, the new compact SUV from Mahindra is internally referred to as the S102 project.
The S102 will feature modern styling, which will be influenced by the SIV 1 concept from SsangYong while staying true to a few Mahindra traits like their distinctive grille. The S102 will also feature Daytime Running Lights like the XUV500 and will share a lot of internal gadgetry with it’s bigger sibling too.
Ssangyong SIV1 rear

If the success of the XUV500 is anything to go by, the S102 compact SUV is sure to be a runaway success when it gets launched at the end of 2014. Considering Mahindra’s track record with killer pricing strategies, we expect the compact SUV to be priced around the Rs 6-9 lakh segment with the top of the line SUV offering 4WD and maybe even an automatic transmission.

Chevrolet Trax
Expected Launch: mid 2014
Expected Price: Rs 9-12 lakh
Chevrolet Trax

Although Chevrolet will drop the name ‘Trax’ for India (Force Motors owns the rights to this name) this tough looking compact SUV will soon make it’s way to Indian shores. The Chevrolet Trax based compact SUV will be offered only with the Fiat derived 1.3 Multijet engine that will also do duty in the Suzuki XA Alpha. The Trax might also be offered with 1.4 Litre Turbocharged petrol engine, details of which are still sketchy.
The Trax derived compact SUV will share a lot of design elements with the larger Captiva and will feature Chevrolet’s new family look like the split grille and the large bow Chevrolet logo. The chunky headlamps compliment the large chunky wheels giving the Trax a burly muscular look.
Chevrolet Trax Rear

We expect the Chevrolet Trax derived compact SUV to be available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options and to take interior design elements from the highly successful Cruze saloon. With its compact size and well-crafted design, this compact SUV might do for Chevrolet what the Ecosport has done for Ford.

Kia Sportage
Expected Launch: Late 2014
Expected Price: 9-11 Lakh
Kia Sportage Front

Kia has long contemplated it’s entry into India and now with it’s new hot image makeover, 2014 could be the correct time for them to finally foray into the uber competitive Indian automotive market. And the car they should enter with is the new Kia Sportage.
With it’s fresh design featuring what Kia calls the ‘Tiger Nose Front’ and sharp headlamp design the Sportage is definitely a sharp looking SUV. The Sportage’s bold and sleek looks certainly has what it takes to stir up the Indian market and with an equally appealing interior, this new entrant is certainly an enticing option if you are in the market for a new compact SUV next year.
Kia Sportage Rear

The Sportage’s compact dimensions may not be under the crucial 4 meter mark, but with competitive pricing, Kia can most certainly aim to make quite the impact.

Although the Kia Sportage internationally comes with a 1.7 Litre Crde engine, the Indian spec ones might get a smaller capacity version to boost fuel economy. The Sportage should be priced between Rs 9-11 lakhs making it an extremely good proposition for someone looking for something new and fresh.

Maruti's new small car, the Celerio will debut at the Auto Expo. Here's what to expect from the Celerio

According to MSI, the Celerio will offer a fuel efficiency of 23.1 km per litre and will be offered in six petrol variants—four with manual transmission and two with auto gear shift.

Maruti Celerio Exterior Front Picture

No matter how many they launch, but every new small car from Maruti never fails to attract attention. This time it is the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, a 3600mm long and 1600mm wide hatchback which will take on the Hyundai i10. The Celerio, which sits on a 2425mm wheelbase, will plug the gap the poor performing A-star and the Zen Estilo have left in Maruti’s otherwise impregnable small car fortress. The Celerio is expected to carry a starting price tag of Rs 3.8 lakh, ex-showroom in Delhi with the price rising to Rs 4.9 lakh for the top of the version. All versions of the Celerio, however, will only be powered by a petrol engine and there are no plans to launch for a diesel variant either.
The Celerio might only come with one engine but there will be an option to choose between a manual and an automatic. The manual is a 5-speed gearbox while the automatic is essentially a clutchless manual. The Celerio will be available in three trim levels – Lxi, Vxi and Zxi – with the Zxi being the top of the line version. One will be able to order the Lxi and the Vxi trims with either the manual or what Maruti calls its semi automatic – the Auto Gear Shift tech, the Zxi trim will only be available with a manual gearbox.
Maruti Celerio Exterior Rear Picture

The engine is the same as the one on the Wagon R. It is an all-aluminium, 998cc, three-cylinder petrol engine that develops a max power output of 68PS at 6000rpm and a peak torque of 90Nm at 3500rpm. Given that the Celerio only weighs 830kg in its heaviest form, the manual version, like the A-star, makes for a peppy little car.
Yes, the A-star is one of the rare Maruti small cars that failed. And it did for good reason. It was cramped inside and had no real boot to speak of. And it also failed to give anything substantial over the competition even with its relatively steeper pricing. The Celerio is the replacement for the A-star. And it offers more in terms on interior room to begin with.
Maruti Celerio Interior Picture

It has wider track lengths - front and rear, and a wheelbase that’s almost as long as the Swift (there’s only a 5mm difference in the wheelbases of the two cars). Moreover, the Celerio has smaller overhangs than the Swift, which means the resultant interior space might be quite similar. But, the boot at 235 litres is more than the Swift. That’s not all, the Celerio also gets stuff like audio controls on the steering, electrically adjustable ORVMs, Bluetooth telephony and a trip computer (though basic) on the top of the line Zxi trim. The Zxi optional trim also gets two airbags upfront and ABS.
The Celerio has the makings of a very good small car but at a starting price of Rs 3.8 lakh for the base Lxi and Rs 4.9 lakh for the top of the Zxi trim. Any higher, and we might have to relook our verdict here. The prices will be announced at the Expo and the Celerio will be available for deliveries soon after.

NEW SKODA OCTAVIA 2013 DETAILED REVIEW,its awesome

                                                TEST DRIVE BY POWERDRIFT

Not many cars in India have managed to do what the Octavia has done for Skoda. Back in 2001, when this executive sedan marked the Volkswagen Group's entry in India, it took the market by storm. And that's exactly what Skoda is planning to do with this all-new Octavia, scheduled to hit the showrooms this October.

The third generation Octavia will be the first Skoda in India that will be woven out of its highly flexible MQB platform, which will eventually form the basis for the future Skoda models to come. As for the new Octavia, the MQB platform means a world of good. Firstly, the interior space has gone up by a great margin, and feels only a shade smaller than the Superb. Okay, that's a bit of exaggeration but yes, it does feel quite roomy at the back. And that is what, we believe, will be the key to stardom for this executive sedan.

Then there is the new, refreshing exterior design. Its a typical Skoda design template with the new Skoda all-metallic logo, the typical front grille and bumper design and the power lines on the bonnet. It practically has Skoda written all over its face. The styling is now sharper than before, lending it a more mature look. From the profile though, it's as understated as before and the boot section now resembles that of the smaller Rapid sedan with the signature C-shaped tail lamps and identical slats around the number plate section. It looks like a grown up Rapid from the rear and we fear it may not go down well with the Indian car buyers. However, in terms of overall styling, its sure not to offend any sentiments.

The new design theme has been carried over into the cabin as well, with the all-new, sharper looking dashboard and the black-beige colour theme dominating in there. The quality of materials used too is a notch higher than before, giving the Octavia cabin a more premium look than before. As before, the seats are extremely comfortable and offer enough support on the go.

The new Octavia will be offered with three engine options, the staple 2.0 TDI turbo-diesel, the highly appreciated 1.8 TSI turbo-petrol and a new 1.4 TSI turbo-petrol. The diesel is available with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed DSG gearbox, the 1.8 TSI gets a 7-speed DSG, while the smaller petrol motor is teamed with a 6-speed manual only.

We sampled the new engines for shorter stints and there was very little that we didn't like out on the tarmac. The 141bhp, 2-litre diesel offers great driveability in varied conditions, and the manual gearbox feels good to use too. Even better is the DSG that is quick to shift gears and keep the motor boiling at the right rpm. The 1.4-litre turbo-petrol motor is the same as found in the VW Jetta, but the power is now up from 122bhp to 138bhp. Although it feels better than the Jetta, there is considerable turbo lag below the 1800rpm-mark, and you will need to work through the 6-speed manual gearbox to stay in the powerband. But no such issues for the 1.8-litre TSI motor that now packs 17 more horses than before, taking it to a total of 177bhp. And coupled with the 7-speed DSG gearbox, this is the best possible way to go bananas in an otherwise practical executive sedan.

Driving the Octavia up and down the mountain roads connecting Chandigarh and the hilly town of Shimla, we realised the Octavia is sure to set new standards in the ride and handling department. It's got an excellent ride, absorbing almost every pothole en route, while only the sharper bumps making themselves felt into the cabin. And the way this sedan handles can put most of the sporty hatchbacks to shame. While taking corners, there is hardly any hint of body roll, and the grip levels from the 205/55 rubber is phenomenal. The steering wheel too is precise and does exactly what you want it to. But if there was a thing to fault then it would have to be that the steering system comes across as a bit too light for our liking. It does weigh up with increase in speed, but not by a great deal. Also, it doesn't offer any sort of feedback, which is a let down.

In all, the new Octavia is sure to set a new benchmark in the executive sedan segment. Starting at Rs 13.95 lakh for the 1.4 TSI and Rs 18.25 lakh for the 1.8 TSI, it’s on par with its competition. But looking at the Indian obsession with the cheaper fuel, we reckon it’s the diesel variants that will outsell the petrol models, with the diesel range starting from Rs 15.55 lakh and going up to Rs 19.45 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). With a range of exciting petrol and diesel engines, an excellent chassis, spacious interiors and fresh styling, the Octavia is a well-sorted product that can give its rivals a run for their money.

Verdict

Octavia, once again, it's a game changer from Skoda. It does lack a bit of drama, but if that is all that you want, this isn't the segment for you. Skoda has got the pricing spot on and if you are in for an executive sedan, look no further.

The two-day all-India bank strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) on January 20-21 was deferred following the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) improving upon their initial pay hike offer of 5 per cent to 9.5 per cent of ‘payslip cost’, C. H. Venkatachalam, General-Secretary, All-India Bank Employees’ Association, told Business Line.

“In view of the IBA coming out with an improved offer on Friday and agreeing to further discuss the issue on January 27, we have decided to defer the strike,” Venkatachalam said.

The revised offer of 9.5 per cent notwithstanding, UFBU will on January 27 look forward to further improvement in the IBA offer in the wake of the reasonable demand by the unions on account of high inflation in the country, he said.

The bilateral talks between the IBA and the UFBU were held in Mumbai on Friday at the instance of the Central Chief Labour Commissioner, who held a round of conciliation talks with the two sides on January 13 in New Delhi.

The next round of talks between IBA and UFBU, a representative body of nine bank unions, will take place in Mumbai on January 27.

Venkatachalam also said the IBA had committed to wrap up the process of wage revision settlement by end June this year.
